What can we do in the area?
Because of its close proximity to the capital city of San José (a spectacular two hour scenic drive), incredible coastline and abundant rainforest reserves, Costa Rica's Central Pacific Coast is the most heavily-visited region in the country.
During your stay at Los Sueños, we encourage you to explore the best of what this area has to offer.
• Rainforest Adventures
Costa Rica has dedicated 27% of its land mass to national parks and protected areas. Los Sueños is perfectly situated between two of the most popular parks, which allows for easy day trips from the resort.
Manuel Antonio is considered the gem of the national parks system. Wildlife sightings are abundant, particularly for white-faced (capuchin) monkeys, coati and sloths. The Punta Catedral trail offers a relatively easy, 45 - minute hike through the rainforest, ending at Playa Blanca, a beautiful white - sand beach with calm waters, perfect for an afternoon of sunning and swimming.
Carara National Park is a transitional forest, which allows excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, as species from both the dry and humid forest environments can be found in the area. It is also home to one of the largest populations of scarlet macaws in the country, best viewed in the early morning and late afternoon hours. A number of private tour operators offer the chance to experience the rainforest canopy up close. A newly opened rainforest tram located in the mountains behind Jaco carries you through the treetops in an open cable car. The more adventurous at heart will definitely experience the thrill of a lifetime on any of the three “zip-line tours” offered in the Jaco-Herradura area. The brainchild of a Costa Rican-based research biologist looking for a way to get close to his subjects, the zip line allows you to rappel along steel cables from platform to platform as you make your way through the rainforest.
Those who prefer the view from the ground can explore back roads and trail systems, traverse rivers and visit incredible viewpoints that would otherwise be inaccessible…all on horseback or all-terrain vehicle.
• Golf
Golfers will rejoice in the fact that the La Iguana course at Los Sueños offers the chance to play through the resort's private rainforest reserve. All caddies are trained naturalist guides, who will point out the various plant and animal species – including monkeys, sloths, toucans, macaws and coati – as you make your way around the challenging 18 - hole course.
• Fun on the Water
Costa Rica's waters literally teem with big game: Dorado (mahi) averaging 40 pounds, Yellowfin tuna that push the 300-pound mark, and one of the largest concentrations of big Pacific sailfish - as well as blue, black and striped marlin - found anywhere. In fact, Costa Rica boasts one of the healthiest billfish fisheries in the world, with 20-fish days being a common occurrence. Unusually calm waters and short rides to the fishing grounds place Los Sueños Resort and Marina at the top of the world's sport fishing destinations.
For a unique cruising experience, head to the Tarcoles River. Specialized boats carry you through the mangroves at the river's mouth, a comfortable vantage point from which to observe an outstanding variety of waterfowl. The boat then heads up-river into the habitat of enormous crocodiles. No time for a tour? The giant reptiles can be easily viewed from the bridge over the Tarcoles River on the coastal highway, a mere 20 - minute drive north of Los Sueños.
The calm waters of Herradura Bay are perfect for water sports. The Marriott hotel rents jet skis, sea kayaks and water - cycles by the hour, and can also arrange for guided combination kayak and snorkeling tours along the stunning coastline of the Central Pacific.
The nearby beaches of Jacó and Hermosa have historically been the most popular surf destinations in Costa Rica, the latter being home to several international surf competitions. The town of Jacó still has an “Endless Summer” feel, despite the fact that it has rapidly developed into a major commercial center for the region. Here you will find dozens of souvenir shops, boutiques, bars and restaurants, pharmacies, supermarkets, banks and other services.
• Kicking Back
Reward yourself at the end of an adventure - filled day! The luxurious treatments provided by the Poseidon Spa at the Marriott hotel are the ultimate indulgences. Trained therapists provide the latest in massages, body treatments and skin care, using precious ingredients from Costa Rica and its rainforests.
What can you tell us about Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is situated on the Central American isthmus, flanked by the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea with a distance of approximately 248 kilometers (155 miles) between coasts. With a total area of 51,200 square kilometers (20,480 square miles), Costa Rica is no larger than the state of West Virginia, yet it contains 6% of the world’s biodiversity.
Costa Rica is well known for the premium that it places on peace, education and democracy, and is often referred to as “the Switzerland of Central America”. In 1949, the government abolished the army, allocating all would - be military expenses to education and health care. As a direct result, the literacy rate rose to 95% and still continues to be one of the highest rates in the Americas. International ports on both coasts; air, ocean and freight transportation services; a well-developed infrastructure and a strategic location at the crossroads of two continents make Costa Rica a contender in world markets. The government’s receptiveness toward new business ventures and excellent incentive plans have lured a growing number of multinational corporations to the country.
Spectacular natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere attract over one million visitors to Costa Rica annually. Nine active volcanoes, diverse forest environments, hot springs, wetlands, lakes, island reserves and 966 kilometers (600 miles) of beaches on two coasts account for the dramatic increase in tourism over the last decade. The odds of seeing wildlife are greater in Costa Rica than anywhere else in the world. The country is home to 1,240 species of butterflies, 845 species of birds, 250 mammal classifications, 160 amphibian categories, 218 types of reptiles and 1,013 varieties of fresh and salt water fish, including several endemic species found nowhere else on the planet. Costa Rica is also the world leader in terms of protected areas, with 27% of its land mass designated as national parks or reserves.
How do we get there?
Los Sueños Resort and Marina is located at Herradura Bay on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, only 10 minutes from the nearby beach town of Jacó and a two-hour scenic drive from Juan Santamaría International Airport in the capital city of San José.
All major U.S. carriers offer daily direct flights to Costa Rica from major hubs such as Miami, Los Angeles, Houston, Dallas, Newark and Chicago. Airport transfer options include rental cars, private shuttle buses and airplane or helicopter charters. We recommend hiring a driver and a van for the drive, plan on spending about $100.
What is the history of the resort?
In 1991, while cruising the Pacific Coast, Californian developer William Royster dropped anchor in Herradura Bay. He was immediately captivated with the region's natural beauty, unique topography and the warmth of the Costa Rican people, and envisioned the creation of a world - renowned destination resort community at that site. After purchasing a 1,100 acre parcel of land that was home to 400 head of cattle and free roaming horses, Royster began six years of feasibility studies that would ultimately lead to the development of the Los Sueños Master Plan. Los Sueños Resort was declared a project of national interest, and the country's first Marina Law was enacted based on the environmental, construction and operational standards that had been established by Los Sueños Resort.
Construction started in 1997 with major infrastructure, including a vast drainage network, sewage treatment plant and road system. At the same time, Royster's staff began an ambitious reforestation program that reclaimed 200 acres of the rainforest that had been destroyed by cattle farming and resulted in the return of many native species to the area.
The resort's hotel and golf course were inaugurated on the eve of the millennium, and the first of 800 projected residences were delivered that same year. Costa Rican President Miguel Angel Rodriguez personally laid the cornerstone for Los Sueños Marina, which officially opened to the public in 2001. Construction of the 200 slips and 80 dry storage units was completed in 2003, and the first phase of the Marina Village commercial center opened in December 2003.
The efforts and expertise of Royster and his partners Paladin Realty Partners (formerly William E. Simon and Sons Realty) and Braemar Homes have made Los Sueños the most successful resort development in Costa Rica. With more than 350 condominium and home sites, Los Sueños Marina is considered the hottest destination in Latin America for its world-class facilities and renowned billfishery, and the Los Sueños Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort is enjoying enviable occupancy year-round.
Is Medical Care available on site?
Yes. The Los Sueños CARE Clinic provides emergency treatment and preventative medical consultations to the Los Sueños community.
The clinic is located within the resort property, and is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., seven days a week. Multilingual doctors are also on call 24 - hours to attend to patients at the clinic, in their residences or on board their yachts.
If further treatment is required once the patient is stabilized, the Clinic will arrange for transport to the renowned CIMA Hospital in San Jose via its new, fully-equipped ambulance or by private airlift if required.
Can Guests of your condo use the Marriott’s Golf and Fitness Facilities?
Yes. The Los Sueños Marriott Ocean & Golf Resort has designed special membership programs that allow Los Sueños our condo guests to enjoy its golf and fitness facilities. La Iguana is a challenging 18 - hole, par - 72 golf course that plays through the resort's rainforest reserve. The hotel's gym features cardiovascular machines, Cybex weight training equipment, free weights and floor mats. How Environmentally Conscious is Los Suenos?
As the only authorized marina in Costa Rica, Los Sueños is subject to stringent environmental monitoring by government agencies.
Los Sueños Marina regulations expressly prohibit the flushing of holding tanks within the facility; fish cleaning or fishing from the docks; and the transport and use of hydrocarbons and other chemical substances within the facility. Any vessels in violation of these rules are immediately expelled from the facility without exception. The resort is proud of its eco - friendly environmental policies…from the marina throughout the entire facility.
